To have an exciting research career, you need to master three factors

You must know where you want to go, break down the barriers that prevent you from researching and mastering the time you have available to you.

I dreamed of a research career when I started as a physician, but I didn't see myself as capable.

You see, my name is Enrique de-Madaria. I am a gastroenterologist in Alicante, a small city on the Mediterranean coast of Spain.

I always dreamed of becoming a professor and researcher, but at first, I encountered barriers that made me believe it was impossible.

The first was the lack of self-esteem, which told me I was not good, intelligent, or brilliant enough to have an academic life. And besides, how could I do it from a small hospital, a small town, and a country with limited support for science? Nor did he have sufficient knowledge to do so.

Finally, I faced the most potent barrier: the lack of time. The patients, my family, my hobbies... I could not add all the effort involved in academic life.

But little by little, I overcame these 3 problems:

* I learned the courage to walk in a world I was passionate about.

* I discovered how to create habits to advance, step by step, with a direction based on my dreams.

* I managed to fit the pieces together to achieve everything without anxiety, with balance, and without leaving my family or healthcare activity aside.

I dedicated myself to pancreatic diseases. My progress was not rapid but progressive, and I added small achievements. Progressing month by month. Year by year.

Growing with colleagues and friends, fostering collaborative teaching and research projects.

And so, little by little, I had exciting experiences that contributed to making me feel happier:

* I published my first articles, first simple and progressively more ambitious. I managed to publish in journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine and the Annals of Internal Medicine. Most importantly, I did it all, looking for the benefit of patients.

* I participated in scientific societies, where I found colleagues with the same concerns and hopes with whom I shared dreams and projects.

* For academic reasons, I visited 18 countries that have given me unforgettable experiences.

* And I really enjoyed one of my most cherished projects, the cities' race against pancreatic cancer: a beautiful way of involving society in research, which became an international sporting event.

In March 2023 I gave a talk on the barriers that prevent you from having an academic life. It is probably the talk where I have had the best feedback. Many people of all ages told me that they identified with everything I said and were very grateful for the advice and motivation I had instilled in them.

However, in 30 minutes, I only had enough time to give a few hints on the subject, something more was needed...

That is why, after two decades of trial and error, of understanding how to progress in a balanced way in the academic world, I have decided to put it all together in a course in which I teach you everything I have learned during this time so that you can learn to:

Manage your time, objectives, and mind for a successful academic career

In this course you will learn:

  • To have a direction in which to direct your efforts through objectives, goals, and dreams so that you know where to direct your steps. As Seneca said, there is no favorable wind for those who do not know where they are going.
  • To identify the barriers and overcome the ghosts that prevent you from moving forward so that nothing can stop you on your way.
  • To develop habits that help you to have time for yourself, your work, your family, and your academic life so that, without realizing it and brick by brick, you can build a balanced and solid life.
  • To manage your time most effectively so that you reach your full potential.
  • How to use the Notion app to organize your life more efficiently, particularly to manage your time.
